Have You Injured a Disc?

For a long time, back pain was believed to be caused by a “slipped” or “torn” disc. After research and a further understanding of the spine, we now know this is not true. Disc problems make up a small portion of the causes of back pain and rarely require surgery for pain relief.

Spinal discs are the thick cushion like material between each of the vertebrae. The role of the disc is to provide shock absorption, protect the spinal cord, and to ensure flexibility of the spine. There are different types of disc problems. A “bulged” disc is the result of small tears in the outermost fibers of the disc. A “protruded” disc, also known as a disc herniation, is a more significant injury. This occurs when the fibers are completely or significantly torn and some of the inside material leaks through. A disc herniation can be painful and may cause nerve compression.

Degenerative disc disease is the most common cause of disc problems. The problem begins when the disc loses water and small tears develop in it. The body will add calcium deposits, known as bone spurs, along the edges of the vertebrae, and the disc space narrows.

There are common signs of disc problems and that may include: back or neck pain, leg or arm pain, stiffness, and numbness and tingling. If you suspect or been diagnosed with a disc problem let our Delray Beach chiropractor helps you. Conservative care through the chiropractic adjustment has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for disc problems.

Dr. Zephirin has been trained in a special technique specifically designed to treat disc issues known as Flexion Distraction Technique. The goal of this technique is to decompress the spine, and nerves to relieve pain and help the body heal the injury to the disc. This technique has been well researched and documented for the treatment of disc problems. It helps to drop the pressure within the disc space, widen the spinal canal foraminal are, reduce pressure on the spinal nerves, and return motion to the spinal joints.
